Walk for Peace
In the midst of a civil war that has divided 12 clans in Papua New Guinea since 2006, community leader John Aini emerges as a beacon of hope. With unwavering determination, he initiates a remarkable walk for peace, spanning both land and sea, aimed at conservation, peace among the warring clans, and, above all, unity in a collective fight against the mining industry's encroachment on the Island.
Lovongai Island, nestled within the Pacific Bismarck Coral Triangle in Papua New Guinea, boasts a rich biodiversity, especially renowned for its unique avian inhabitants, including four exclusive bird species. Despite its delicate ecosystem, the island has become a focal point for extensive mining ventures, with 49 minerals, including gold and copper, identified within its bounds.
This has resulted in extractive industries targeting the island, exacerbating tensions among Lovongai clans, sparking land disputes, and resulting in widespread environmental degradation and loss of life.
Community leader, John Aini, initiates a walk for reconciliation to reach out to the warring factions scattered across the island. As he embarks on his journey, John encounters many challenges and obstacles. Entrenched mistrust and hostilities threaten to derail his mission at every turn.
